5 Signs The Superhero Movie Bubble Is About To Burst

2. Superheroes Are The Safest Bet In Hollywood

Most movie genres have a high variance of success. Blockbusters, dramas comedies, in each category some will fail and some will succeed. But that isn€™t true for superheroes. Yes some films inevitably bomb, but when you narrow it down to the recognisable heroes especially ones associated with massive universes and franchises like DC or Marvel and the failure rate drops. Almost regardless of quality these films consistently make money. Spider-man hasn€™t had a flop in 15 years, same with Batman and any of the Avengers. Working for a studio in the film industry is almost professional gambling. You pick a project, get the talent together, throw down the money and then roll the dice. Every movie is a bet and over time you hope you come out ahead. But some bets are better than others, giving millions to a young Will Smith or Steven Spielberg is a lot safer than shelling out 75 million for Nicolas Cage to make Ghost Rider 2. A good producer can be successful in any genre, it€™s just a lot easier with super heroes.
