5 Surprising Cinematic Universes (And 5 Which Never Got Off The Ground)

9. Surprising: The 'Friday the 13th on Elm Street' Shared Universe

Men in Black Jump Street

Two of horror's most iconic villains, Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger) and Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) have starred in various sequels, spin-offs, reboots, and remakes. These two sadistic serial killers, whose targets tend to be children or teenagers, have slashed, stabbed, and gored their way through countless victims via increasingly gruesome and outlandish means.

With the 2003 release of Ronny Yu's Freddy vs. Jason, audiences were shocked to learn that these two murderous monsters live (and kill) within the same shared cinematic universe.

The film opens in Hell, where the now-powerless Freddy Krueger resides. Using what little power he has left, Freddy brings Jason back from the dead and consequently uses him to kill once more.

As this delightfully gory movie draws to an end, the iconic antagonists battle each other: Freddy cuts off Jason's fingers; Jason manages to remove one of Freddy's arms. Ultimately, the pair are ostensibly killed by two teenagers. However, in the film's closing moments we discover that Freddy and Jason have survived against the odds and are evidently ready to kill again.

While the film received lukewarm reviews upon release, audiences were nonetheless delighted to see two such iconic characters finally meet face to face.
