5 Things Nora Ephron Did For Women in the Entertainment Industry

3. Directing

Ephron€™s directing career was a mix of highs (Sleepless in Seattle, You€™ve Got Mail and Julie & Julia) and lows (Bewitched, Mixed Nuts). However you define her successes in this field she always followed her passions (cooking, New York) to create worlds that delve into the humane aspects of modern life. Ephron specialized in crafting films that are romantic but complicated. They are adult films were characters must compete for their goals among the backdrop of contemporary American life. Her transition to directing was a calculated one as she saw the powerlessness that could overtake writers. As she once wrote, €œOne of the best things about directing movies, as opposed to merely writing them, is that there€™s no confusion about who€™s to blame: you are.€ Ephron€™s career as a director would open the doors for many more women to get behind the camera and tell stories that were important to them.
