5 Totally Insane Incidents Involving Werner Herzog

2. Herzog Eats Shoe To Support Independent Filmmaking

Shoe A friend of Herzog by the name of Errol Morris showed significant promise as a filmmaker but had never been able to complete a project. Herzog told him he'd eat his shoe if he completed his documentary Gates of Heaven. Morris completed the project. Herzog then ate his shoe. The whole thing is documented in Les Blank's appropriately named film Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe. At one point we see Herzog take his shoe off, brush some white gunk of the bottom of it, stuff it with garlic then plop it in a pot. Tasty. Herzog didn't get sick eating his shoe. Perhaps because he didn't eat the rubber sole, reasoning that when you eat chicken you "leave the bones." True enough. Though we must point out that, when eating a shoe, you should leave the everything.
