5 Up And Coming Directors Who Demand Your Attention

1. Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic Park IV)

Colin Trevorrow All new filmmakers dream of having the opportunity to write and direct a sequel/reboot to an already popular movie franchise. But it is not too often that it's an up and coming director who is handed the metaphorical car keys to drive the franchise. Colin Trevorrow gets to do just that. Trevorrow came onto the scene in 2002 with his short comedy film Home Base which was released on the internet and quickly became viral. After working on several script treatments he and his writing partner Derek Connolly began work on Trevorrow's feature debut, Safety Not Guaranteed. The film stars Aubrey Plaza as an intern working for a Seattle based magazine. She is assigned to help investigate a newspaper article that reads "Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before." She meets the author of the article, played by Mark Duplass, who works at a grocery store and quickly develops a romantic interest with the seemingly paranoid "time traveler". The story was inspired by an actual article that was published in 1997 as a joke. After the film debuted at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival it went on to receive high critical praise and Derek Connolly won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. There were many rumors that Trevorrow would be signed as the next director for Star Wars Episode VII but when it was announced that J.J. Abrams would be directing, Disney announced that Trevorrow and Connolly would work on a remake of the 1986 science fiction fantasy movie Flight of the Navigator. In 2002 it was rumored that Universal and Steven Spielberg wanted to produce another Jurassic Park film but in 2006 it was reported that the movie was stuck in "production hell". Finally in early 2011 the studio announced that production would begin after an approved script was written and a director was found to take on the massive project. It wasn't until this past March that Trevorrow was signed on to direct Jurassic Park IV and write the script along with Connolly. There is some speculation that the movie might be a reboot and not continue the story after the failed Jurassic Park III. There will be a tremendous amount of expectations to live up to with the next Jurassic Park and Trevorrow has his work cut out for him. Time will tell if this up and coming director has what it takes to deliver on a mega budget production.
