5 Upcoming Movies That Could Save 2013
2013 has been a long way from a vintage year for cinema. Sure, there have been great pieces of work such as Only God Forgives, A Field in England, Like Someone in Love, The Act of Killing and The Place Beyond the Pines, but cinema overall is having a down year. The first quarter of the year in particular was awful as cinema screens became saturated with half-hearted blockbusters and dreary nonsense. It's also been a weak year for blockbusters as Iron Man 3 aside, mammoth budgeted extravaganzas have limped up the box-office charts. Even Man of Steel, after it's giant opening has grossed significantly less than Fast and Furious 6, something they're bound to be disappointed in. The Lone Ranger, Jack and the Giant Slayer, After Earth, Pacific Rim and White House Down all struggled at the box office and performed significantly below expectations On a more artistic level, it hasn't been a memorable year either. Whilst I loved Only God Forgives, it has received an incredibly divided reception and other auteurs such as Terrence Mallick, Harmony Korine and Park Chan-Wook, Baz Luhrmann and Sofia Coppola also received mixed receptions for their latest pictures. There are still many 'big name' directors waiting to have their films released this year such as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, David O. Russell, Ron Howard, Alfonso Cuaron, Spike Lee and Spike Jonze meaning that all is not lost for 2013. I have detailed five movies I think could and should make a lasting impression upon release and have gone for movies we know most about rather than something like Spike Jonze's Her, which we know hardly anything about.
