2. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
The awesomely-cast 3:10 to Yuma, released in 2007, follows notorious outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his escort as they endeavour to get him on the 3:10 train to Yuma prison, where he is to be tried and hanged for his numerous crimes. Christian Bale co-stars as Dan Evans, a ranch owner in need of cash and the good fortune of rain to fall on his land; he volunteers to join the escort for $200. Much of the film revolves around the trials and tribulations (read: gunfights) of the journey to Yuma. However, the action is never over the top, and the suspense is kept at a high as the viewer knows that Wade's men are hot on the trail of the escort. A major highlight of the movie, where the tension reaches nail-biting levels, comes in the hotel scene - but I won't spoil that here. The original, released half a century earlier, takes very much the same path as the remake, but with the hallmarks of a classic Western. For instance, where the 2010 release relies on ambient noises and subtle tones to generate atmosphere, the '57 version has a cool theme tune, like so many westerns of the era.
Both movies are good in their own ways, but I consider the Crowe/Bale Yuma the better of the two - though they aren't miles apart in terms of the overall enjoyment factor.
