50 Greatest Action Movies Of All Time

35. The Rock (1996)

The Rock
Buena Vista Pictures

Michael Bay's second feature still remains his best, with the director firmly establishing the visual style that would go on to become his stock-in-trade. A throwback buddy movie armed with a blockbuster budget, The Rock's strong cast and expertly-crafted action scenes more than make up for a typically implausible and often nonsensical plot.

Freshly-minted Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage seamlessly brings his manic and intense acting style to the role of action hero, with his odd-couple dynamic with the typically-charismatic Sean Connery the movie's undoubted highlight, even amongst the thrilling car chases, shootouts and explosions.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
