Plot: A ballerina (Natalie Portman) descends into madness while preparing for the role of a lifetime.

This psychological horror film from the great Darren Aronofsky was so bloody good that even the Academy, who usually snub horror, couldn't bring themselves to ignore it. It received five nominations at that year's Oscars, with Natalie Portman winning a well-earned Best Actress gong for her career-best tour-de-force in the lead role.

It gained equally well-earned nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and even Best Picture, and that nod couldn't have been more deserved.

This really was one of the very best films of 2010; a consummately crafted tragedy that's as sad as it is captivating, with harrowing scares, compelling drama and flawless acting all the way through. It's a true work of art, and quite arguably the high-point of Darren Aronofsky's career.
