50 Greatest James Bond Moments Of All Time

36. Skyfall: Silva Attacks M's Hearing

The Spy Who Loved Me
MGM

This is one scene that really grabs you by the throat.

When main antagonist Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) goes after M (Judi Dench), the stakes are already absolutely sky-high, since M is such a brilliant character who no viewer will want coming to any harm, but then the scene's superb cross-cutting between different locations as the threat of Silva and his men approaches ratchets the tension up to almost unbearable levels.

Just before Silva breaks in, M reads some of the poem Ulysses by Tennyson and this moment proved a deeply moving way of highlighting the film's themes and the importance of people like James Bond.

Then, once Silva arrives, there's a wickedly tense and claustrophobic gunfight which will have viewers on the edge of their seats all the way through. Additionally, the way in which the scene reveals Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), a character many probably assumed was a villain, as a heroic figure who saves M was also a lovely touch.

So, thanks to the nerve-wracking suspense and the heartfelt dialogue, this is one of the many incredible scenes from this franchise classic.
