Yann Demange's adaptation of Evan Hughes' The Trials Of White Boy Rick boasts an impressive cast including Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Derne and Jennifer Jason Leigh and an eye-catching story charting the rise to criminal legend of Richard Wershe Jr. If you don't know the name, you might know his other title - White Boy Rick - a gangster who defied the traditionally African-American ruled gangland culture of his community to achieve unprecedented power and infamy.

Wershe started his life of notoriery as one of the FBI's youngest ever informants, at just 14, and went on to be locked up in 1987 for life at the age of just 17 supposedly for carrying drugs with intent to supply. His version of events suggests he was jailed when he outlived his usefulness to the police and when he helped turn attention to corruption in Detroit PD. That should all make for a compelling watch.

The fact that it was shunted out of its initial January release window hopefully suggests a little more studio confidence.

Release Date: August 17th
