50 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2023
8. Poor Things
Though it was originally expected to be an awards season player this year after wrapping shooting in late 2021, Yorgos Lanthimos' new film certainly sounds like it's going to be worth the wait.
Based on Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel, Emma Stone stars as Emma Baxter, a woman who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband and, get this, has her brain replaced with that of her unborn child with the help of her father (Willem Dafoe).
Wait, what?
Even for Lanthimos' standards this sounds incredibly out-there, but if anyone can pull it off, it's probably him. With The Favorite co-writer Tony McNamara penning the script, it's even easier to have faith.
The wider cast also counts among its number Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael, Mark Ruffalo, and Margaret Qualley.
Strap in for this one, because it's sure to be one of 2023's wildest movies.
Poor Things releases sometime in 2023.
7. Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan returns not with another time-bending sci-fi action flick but a biopic of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), albeit with Nolan's typically bombastic visual presentation.
Clearly a passion project for the filmmaker, Oppenheimer's first trailer suggests a Nolan film like we've never seen before, enlivened by one hell of an ensemble cast, including alongside Murphy: Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, and many, many more.
While it's unlikely to ignite the box office with the fervour of his fiction films, Oppenheimer certainly looks like the director's most mature film yet, while still touting his trademark technical ingenuity. Don't be shocked if this is the one that finally wins him an Oscar.
Oppenheimer releases on July 21
