50 Movies Where Evil Won
13. The Wailing
Plot: A demon begins possessing people to murder their families, and policeman Jong-goo (Kwak De-won) tries to protect his daughter from the curse.
South Korean storytelling has a strong tradition of melodrama, and so many of the country's films and TV shows go for far sadder, heavier endings than many of their Western counterparts. The country's horror movies are no different, as you can usually expect a large number of the main characters to die before the end.
That's exactly what happens in The Wailing, this grim and haunting horror epic from director Na Hong-jin. Jong-goo goes after the wrong suspect, and the real villain gets away with everything, successfully driving Jong-goo's young daughter mad, and she kills him, his wife, and his mother-in-law.
This makes The Wailing one of those great horror movies that will absolutely crush your soul. If it ever gets remade in Hollywood (hopefully it won't), then it's likely that it'd be given a happier ending, since it's hard to imagine any studio being comfortable with doing such an oppressively bleak story.
