6 Actors Who Nearly Died Filming 2015's Biggest Movies
2. Idris Elba Fell Off A Cliff & Almost Plunged To His Death - Beasts Of No Nation
Beasts Of No Nation isn't out yet, but it's sure to become one of the biggest and most talked about movies of the year on account of the fact that it's Netflix's first independent, full-length motion picture venture (which means everyone is going to watch it when the service drops it on their streaming service come October, including you). Throw in a story about Idris Elba very nearly coming to a sticky end during the making of the film and... well, you're super intrigued now, aren't you? Believe it or not, then, but Elba - who went deep into the wilds of Ghana to make the film with director Cary Fukunaga - was almost killed during the making of Beasts when he leant against a tree branch which proceeded to snap, causing the actor to plummet over the side of a cliff - with a 90 foot drop. Luckily, Elba managed to cling to a narrow ridge which prevented him from falling into the dark depths below. In the actor's own words:
I remember catching onto this big branch that was sticking up, and I literally was like, Whoa! It was a moment where I was like, This is the real deal.'"
That's right: we very nearly lost one of the coolest actors in Hollywood because he decided to do something as mundane as "lean against a tree." As a general rule of thumb, it's always good to ensure you're not on a cliff edge at all times - Africa, Europe, America; it doesn't matter where. Just make sure.
