6 Annoyingly Repetitive Movie Trends Ruining Modern Hollywood

3. The "Next Harry Potter"

Harry Potter was an unqualified success story. A rare example of a hugely successful book series transferring almost seamlessly to the big screen, losing little of its charm, wit, or magic along the way. In many ways, it was lightning in a bottle: a fantastical tale, encompassing the perils of adolescence without alienating viewers outside of its key demographic. It is a feat others have struggled to repeat. That is, not for the want of trying. The series is largely credited with kicking off the young adult adaptation craze that still continues to this day as the opposing spectrum to the grey pound crowd, both crowds book-ending working adults too busy for regular cinema trips. Despite great production volume, rarely has a film of this nature been able to capture the universal appeal of Potter. Hunger Games aside, a trail of failed franchise starters such as The Host and The Mortal Instruments allude to a waning interest in the oft-repeated teen fantasy/sci-fi approach. Much like with the senior audience, it is not that teens do not deserve their own cinematic sub-culture, but rather that they deserve something more diverse and expansive than one bland young adult book clone after another. As long as there are books of this nature to adapt, however, this trend is surely set to continue. Recent Examples: The Hunger Games Series (2012-2015), The Divergent Series (2014-15), The Giver (2014), The Maze Runner (2014), The Mortal Instruments (2013), The Host (2013), Beautiful Creatures (2013), The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)
