1. Strangers on a Train (Alfred Hitchcock)
Gets Lost in the Shuffle Of: Vertigo, Psycho, Rear Window, The Birds, North By Northwest, Dial M For Murder Any film that is able to provide a climax with a merry-go-round of death as the centerpiece is going to get a thumbs up from me. While
Strangers may not be as warmly funny as
North By Northwest or as legendarily terrifying as
Psycho, it is the best mix of comedy and suspense that Hitchcock ever put together. And the film really works. Highlighting some intense scenes from the most unlikely prospects (like a tennis match), Hitchcock is really just showing off with this film. You might also notice that
Strangers was the earliest of his films in the likes of those mentioned above, so it seems that his first classic often misses the boat of his later works. Give
Strangers on a Train another viewing. It's nice to be surprised every once in a while.
"My theory is that everyone is a potential murderer."
