6 Best & 6 Worst Historical Movie Epics Of The 2000s

5. Any Cut of Alexander (2004)

AlexanderWarner Bros.Oliver Stone's $155m passion project tanked at the box office, just about clawing back the massive budget. In the decade since it first hit theaters, the director has released no less than three further versions of the movie, but none of them have managed to overcome the dramatic and emotional shortcomings that mired the first cut in such mediocrity. Colin Farrell does his best as the title character, and certainly isn't helped by the awful hairstyle, but fails to convincingly portray a man of such authority. Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins overdo it with a pair of hammy performances, while the rest of the massive ensemble cast have little success with the overwrought script, with flourishes of visual brilliance too few and far between. The Director's Cut, Unrated Cut and Ultimate Cut seek to enhance and expand the story and run for 167, 214 and 206 minutes respectively, but all four versions of the director's ambitious undertaking ultimately fail to do justice to one of history's greatest figures.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
