Traditionally, when it comes to movies, it's not the clean-cut hero that audiences love. It's not the loyal sidekick. Or the comic relief. (Well okay, sometimes it is). No, when it comes to the movie characters that people love the most, it's the rogue. The one character that will play by their own rules, say exactly what is on their mind and do what needs to be done. Sometimes they're good at heart, sometimes they're bad through and through...it doesn't matter. You might not like them in real life, but watching them on film...well they certainly bring a smile to your face. Han Solo may have been in it 'for the money' when he first appeared in
Star Wars Episode VI: A New Hope. He'll kill to save his own skin (Greedo didn't shoot first, no matter what the special edition showed us!!!) but he ultimately knew he couldn't leave his newfound friends in the lurch and returned to save the day in the climatic moments of the Death Star battle. Sure, Luke fired the missiles but we cheered on Han a little harder...and that's because he was a much more fun and engaging character to watch. At the other end of the scale, every superhero villain is a rogue of sorts. They absolutely refuse to play by society's rules. As to principles and honesty, that's a tricky one. On one end of the scale, the white knight-turned Two Face was willing to kill Commissioner Gordon's kid in The Dark Knight. On the other end, Ra's Al Ghul was a man with principles...he was willing to let Gotham burn but that was to wipe its corruption from the Earth. It was a noble cause in his eyes. Rule breakers can ultimately be good or bad at heart and audiences love both. Does that make you an anarchist? Certainly not. It just means you're easily won over by a bad boy (or girl's) charm. In the movies themselves, that charm (sometimes literally) allows these rogues to get away with murder. Here are take a look at 6 charming movie rogues who got away with terrible things. Because sometimes the consequences are more dire than you think... (As always, there will be spoilers for those who haven't seen the films listed below)
