Deadpool. If there was one single reason and one alone for this film's status as an abomination it is this iconic character of the X-Men Marvel Universe and how they completely massacred him in every way. Apparently there was talk of giving this famous character (?) his own stand alone movie with the initial plans being that after the X Men trilogy wrapped up, there would be a spinoff series that would introduce us to many of the X-Men and their individual stories on how they came to be. Hence the title "X Men Origins". But after this movie "supposedly" under performed (which is insanity in itself as I will point out later) the franchise was rebooted into a different direction with X Men: First Class. Which in turn has allowed for all the mistakes this film and the Last Stand made (Again, ?) to be rectified using time travel and the talents of original director and the be all or end all of the X Men series, Bryan Singer. Which means Deadpool could be brought back somehow in all of his comic book glory. But for those who do follow this belief system, I have to ask you? WHO IN THE BLUE HELL IS DEADPOOL? You see, in the years before this film came out I was too busy touring the road and attempting rock stardom to bother with such minor detail (yes, I am sorry, but they are minor in terms of filmmaking for non comic book brethren). I never got to catch up on 90's Saturday morning cartoons as I was either always coming home from a show or sleeping off a gig. In fact, I had never heard of him before this film came out. And let's couple this with the character Gambit, whom I had actually heard of before, but did not know his back story, merely his image. Now granted, his first foray on film was brief and his appearance in comparison does seem a little less ordinary (not good for any X Men). But let's not forget (which you all seemingly did), this is an "Origin" story set in the 70's. Mutants were literally a hunted species back then so Gambit was not going to traverse the planet in his trademark purple muscle shirt (It is what it looks like folk) or showcase his wonderful card tricks outside of a magic show or impressionable young lady. And apart from the physics problems associated with Deadpool (the blades are too long for his arm to bend if you didn't notice), no one seem to notice the main problem with their argument. There is not one piece of dialogue in this whole film that actually refers to Ryan Reynolds or anyone else for that matter as "Deadpool" (even in the credits). So yes, even though the character obviously is based on this mutant, who is to say that it has to be the actual Deadpool and not like a distant relative, say his Uncle, or even Grandfather. For again, if the X Men Universe is in the not too distant future, this being the actual Deadpool would make absolutely no sense. Which again draws my ire and makes me crazy. There has been precedent for this with two characters amalgamated into one before this. So there is no reason why this can't be the case with Ryan Reynolds. And to top it all of this film is actually a great action adventure with the right amount of drama to give an emotional context to all involved. The story arc itself is not only a great prequel to what some say is the definitive superhero movie with X2, but has a lot less continuity issues than just about every other spinoff that has come out. First Class, although a fine stand alone film seemingly disregarded the entire backstory developed in the original X Men and now has forced them to hack out a time travel story to essentially tie up the loose ends. Origins did not do this. It's story parameters when it comes to what came previously is almost second to none. Everything is explained, from his jacket right down to where he lost his memory. You can watch this than follow it up with X2 (or X Men for that matter) and it fits perfectly within this narrative, which you can't do with "First Class." Some people throw out the argument that "if Sabretooth is Wolverines brother, how come he did not recognize him originally?" Oh wow, how stupid can fan boys be (or unimaginative)? Well, lets forget the fact that Wolverine has lost his memory and it is set quite possibly 50-70 years into the future. There actually is no dialogue in X Men also that makes the claim that Sabretooth did not recognize Wolverine. And the surprise look he gives Wolverine in the initial outing. Well, try going by life not seeing your best friend from kindergarten for fifty years and then tell me how much surprise (and confusion) you had after the initial first meet. Coupled with this the fact that Sabretooth has no dialogue and seems to generally be distracted at times explains a hell of a lot more to someone who is willing to suspend a little disbelief. I enjoy X-Men Origins where to the point that the trilogy for me is this and X Men 1 & 2 (not discrediting the third outing mentioned previously of course). There is nothing really wrong with this movie because to me all of the petty arguments the unimaginative fan boys have against it can all be pretty much rebuked. One more thing, this is a film that according to sources, because of its underwhelming performance profit wise, almost ended the entire franchised and started the current reboot. Well allow me to retort.... Budget: $150 Million Worldwide Box Office Take: $375 Million DVD Sales (in the United States alone): $80 million That's right, a half a billion dollar return with a $350 million dollar profit = FLOP! It's madness I tell you.
Passions in life: Movies, Music and Wrestling....My childhood was spent growing up in the "Outback" of Australia (I'm a little bit country) and my adulthood resided within the city limits (I'm a little bit rock and roll), so you could say that I am the best (or worst) of both worlds. A 6 foot 7 ex wannabe pro wrestler (whose career was cut short due to a busted back, NOT caused by wrestling) & muso who has a precocious cat & a habit of doing the wrong thing but for the right reasons. The story of my life????
