6 Financially Successful Movies That Killed Big Franchises

2. Superman Returns

Budget: 209,000,000 Worldwide Box Office: 391,081,192 When Superman Returns was released to audiences a sequel had already been announced and given a mid-2009 release date. The intentions for the sequel were for it to be far more action packed. Brian Singer and writer Michael Dougherty felt they had done the groundwork with Superman Returns and now it was time to pay it off with huge action pieces. Brainiac and Bizarro were being considered for roles as primary villains and other Kryptonians were set to appear. Unlike many of the other films that are a part of this list, critics were mostly positive about Superman Returns, with the film receiving 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. For it's time that was a very good score for a superhero action film. Two years later, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov was clear that the company felt the film's story was a mistake and despite making nearly two hundred million dollars in profit they were going to reboot the series yet again.
