6 German Films That Positively Wallow In Gloom

4. Suicide (2004)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POmpsBHbhgI Filmed documentary-style, Suicide is one heck of a downer movie which is destined never to be appreciated by anyone except lugubrious folk like me. It is about two film makers who advertise online to film your suicide. That is the basic plot, and we see graphic acts of the suicidal doing their thing. A lot of it is highly disturbing material which looks very realistic. Over the course of the film, the film makers portrayed in the movie become more and more involved in the on screen suicide action, mimicking the actions of the film crew in Man Bites Dog. The scenes of death are relentless - two girls down vodka and pills, an old man rejects his heart pills, a man shoots up an air bubble - and all of this is the less disturbing stuff. Thankfully, there are a few silly twist endings to relieve the bleakness or else we, the viewers, would be committing suicide ourselves to escape this procession of morbid events. Some people might find the film slow and boring - being little more than a litany of suicidal happenings, but for the morbidly inclined among us, the film is utterly absorbing.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
