6 Groundbreaking Films That Redefined Their Genres

5. Adventure Genre - Raiders of the Lost Ark

It€™s the hat. It€™s the whip. It€™s the maniacal Nazi bad guys. It€™s the theme tune. It€™s the €˜fun-for-all-the-family€™ appeal. Whether he€™s hanging around under trucks, jumping out of airships or outrunning boulders, you could do a lot worse for chilled out weekend viewing than the €˜Indiana Jones€™ tri-, I mean, quadrilogy. Sharing the same director and principle actor as the previously mentioned €˜Star Wars€™ franchise, the €˜Indy€™ films share some similar attributes to their science fiction counterparts €“ both series€™ were originally trilogies that were later expanded outwards; both explore the dichotomy between good and evil as well as the grey area between the two; both have a bit of romance; both make frequent use of tongue €“ in €“ cheek humour to get a laugh; and both present some great action sequences, albeit without the gore and savagery of more modern titles.

What allows €˜Indiana Jones€™ to stand apart from the €˜Star Wars€™ films, however, is that the former has a far more historical basis serving to give the whole experience a completely different visual and narrative arc. I€™ll be the first to admit that other World War II films have given us guns, motorbikes, castles and daring rescues countless times before, but few have pulled it off with such fantastical flair as George Lucas and co. These daring escapades, like something from a boy€™s wartime comic, are brought to life further through the introduction of some truly memorable characters €“ who can forget Shortround, or the excellent portrayal of Dad by the living legend that is Sean Connery? It€™s his inclusion in the third film that marks it, for me at least, as the greatest. Other top picks: €˜Pirates of the Caribbean€™, €˜The Mummy€™ Click "next" below for the Road Movie/Car Chase genre...
