6 Hollywood Mysteries That Were Never Solved

4. The Death Of Superman

The Superman Curse is the name given to the series of misfortune suffered by people who have worked on various Superman movies, in particular those playing the titular hero. For example, Christopher Reeve was paralysed after falling from a horse, and passed away a few years later. Bud Collyer was the first man to voice Superman, from 1941-43, but after returning to the role in 1966 he died just three years later. Lee Quigley, who only played Superman as a baby, died due to solvent abuse aged just 14. Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill, well, they had the bad luck to be in Superman Returns and Man of Steel respectively. It's mostly attributed, however, to George Reeves, who played Superman back in the 1950s. He was found dead of a gunshot wound in his home back in 1959, and the official ruling was that he had committed suicide. However, there were four other people in the house at the time (his fiancee Leonore Lemmon, and three guests) who waited a suspiciously long time before calling the police. Furthermore, stray bullet cases were found next to the body, and no fingerprints were found on the gun. Many believe that Reeves was instead killed by Toni Mannox, with whom he was having an affair, while others believe it was Lemmon who murdered him. These possibilities were explored in the Ben Affleck film Hollywoodland, however despite the doubt and controversy the official cause remains as suicide.
