2. Toy Story 3
Ok, theres no point in flogging dead horses and this has probably been covered elsewhere on the internet. But Im a firm believer in the idea that you can continue flogging that carcass, as long as you flog it from another angle. Have I taken my metaphor too far? Yeah, probably. But anyway, here goes. By the end of Toy Story 3, weve established that the toys have been effectively reincarnated by Andy leaving them with Bonnie. Theyre finally getting the attention theyve been starved for the last 7-ish years, and theyre thrilled. In fact, so are we, between the tears. Everything seems rosy, at least for the moment. But what happens when Bonnie grows up? Of course you might answer that theyll just go to Sunnyside Day Care. Well, I guess you could be right, but its a bit of a leap of faith, isnt it? Weve seen whats happened before when parents sort out unloved toys its something of a lottery between trash, yard sales and donation, with only one of those options spelling out a half-assured good end. Parents can be shockingly unsentimental when it comes to outgrown toys, and if Bonnies mum stops working at Sunnyside a feasible possibility a good amount may visit the landfill by the time Bonnie becomes a teenager. If they are sold at a yard sale, whos to say they wont end up being sold to a psycho like Rex? Thats surely a fate worse than abandonment. Of course, its not as if the day care represents some sort of Shangri-La when they get too many toys theyll throw the old ones out, and make no mistake, Woody and company will probably be nearing 20 years old by that point, and I dont think Sunnyside staff have the same eye for toy antiques that Al from the second instalment did. Theyll be going into the trash, and this time they wont have the claw to save them.
