6 Reworkings Of Pride And Prejudice (That Are Better Than Pride And Prejudice And Zombies)

6. Saints Row IV

Having started out as a low rent Grand Theft Auto knock-off, Saints Row has managed to carve out its own niche as the series has gone on by embracing increasingly unhinged and bonkers situations and events. Perhaps nothing better illustrates this than the bizarre alien invasion-Austen crossover of the fourth installment, released in 2013. While Pride + Prejudice + Zombies really struggles with its have its cake and eat it attitude where it, on the one hand, wants to use its trashy B-picture qualities to send up "stuffy, serious literature" and, on the other, embrace and reflect the original novel's witty, satirical qualities, Saints Row IV actually manages to pull it off. Mostly this works because Pride And Prejudice is used as more of a running gag than a central plot point (even though the entire narrative is framed by a narration from Austen that begins with the book's famous opening words and ends with the reveal of the author herself emerging from a stasis chamber, having been snatched by time travelling aliens). It's just kind of part of the nonsensical world of Saints Row that the game's gang boss-cum-President of the United States hero and alien emperor villain are both fans of the book, to the extent that the latter can be heard reading out the first chapter over the in-game radio stations.
