When will Willem Dafoe learn that two-person getaways aren't his thing?

Antichrist is easily the most disturbing companion piece featured on our list and viewer discretion is advised. It is famous for its graphic violence and the tone of the movie is set as early as the opening scene when viewers are shown an explicit unsimulated sex scene. Lars Von Trier wrote the film when he was hospitalised for a depressive episode and it is an extremely bleak movie with none of the comic relief that we're treated to in The Lighthouse.

However, there are similarities between the two movies. Obviously, Dafoe is a leading actor in both. Antichrist sees Dafoe playing another character whose name is unclear (it isn't uttered during the movie) taking his partner (Charlotte Gainsbourg) to a cabin in the woods after the death of their child. He concocts this idea on the basis of his work as a therapist and his scepticism of the treatment that she had been receiving. It is a bad idea.

Rather than curing her ills, the retreat sees her spiral out of control, manifesting in extreme sadomasochism. Animals are used as a symbol of evil in Antichrist, the woman calling nature 'Satan's church'. Not dissimilar to the sacred gull that Young kills in The Lighthouse to 'change the wind' and damn them both to a grisly fate.
