6 Underground Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
Michael Bay at his most excessive...for better and for worse.
Michael Bay's first collaboration with Netflix, the $150 million star-studded blockbuster 6 Underground, is now streaming worldwide, and true to form for the divisive director, his latest bombastic tentpole is, well, pretty much everything you'd reasonably expect.
On one hand, it's neat to have such an over-the-top action tentpole available to stream day one from the comfort of your own home, though at the same time, this is hardly one of Bay's stronger or more cohesive efforts, as evidenced by the heavily mixed reviews so far.
Despite the strong cast and a script from Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the end result feels shockingly sloppy and cobbled together at times, with Bay taking a weirdly unfussed approach to the film's technicals - usually a high-point for his movies.
Is 6 Underground totally watchable? Absolutely, especially with no added cost to pay beyond your Netflix fees. But is it also completely disposable and forgettable, and a squandering of all the talent involved - including Bay? Undeniably.
As one of Netflix's first forays into unapologetic blockbuster filmmaking, it's certainly an interesting experiment, though not one that's likely to linger long in the memory, sadly...
