4. Her And Dallas Buyers Club Get A Lot Of Love
Her has certainly received a lot of love from critics since it first premiered at last year's New York Film Festival. While it did nab a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay last weekend, there was still some question as to whether or not it was too weird for the Academy. Certainly, it has been too weird for general audiences as it had a very weak showing in the box office this past weekend. Nevertheless, the movie has received five nominations, including: Best Picture, Original Screenplay, and Production Design. The biggest surprise, however, has to be its inclusion in the Best Original Song and Score categories. Believe it or not, Arcade Fire and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are now Oscar nominees. Until Trent Reznor came along a few years ago, it was rare to see rock musicians in these categories. It seems as if the Academy are no longer the squares that they used to be. While there was no doubt Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto would receive acting nominations for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club, who thought the movie would get this much love? The film received six nominations overall: Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Original Screenplay. The most telling nomination is in the editing category. The last film to win best picture without an editing nomination is 1980's Ordinary People so the fact that Dallas Buyers Club has been included in that category shows that the Academy really loved the film; however, the lack of a Best Director nod keeps it from being a major frontrunner.
