If there's one consistently strong element of Roland Emmerich's movies, it's the visuals, and Resurgence sure doesn't slouch in that department.

Even during the dull opening act, the movie looks great, boasting jaw-dropping state-of-the-art visual effects to build a believable world that's easy to engage with and immerse yourself in.

While so many blockbuster tentpoles these days suffer with blurry, unconvincing CGI, here it looks clean and crisp even during the more chaotic action beats, and Emmerich's shot selections make the most of the utterly insane scale of the alien invasion.

Whether it can score a Best Visual Effects Oscar nomination down the line remains to be seen, but as far as this summer's blockbusters go, Resurgence boasts some of the best CGI so far.
