7 Acclaimed Recent Movies Everyone Will Turn On

4. Ready Player One

The Acclaim: Another visually dazzling winner from Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One was praised for its creative aesthetic, solid performances and nostalgic abundance of pop-culture references.

Why Everyone Will Hate It: Though watching Ready Player One on the biggest screen you can find sure made for a great first experience, viewing the film again at home reveals just how hollow and superficial it really is.

It desperately wants to be viewed as a love letter to all things geek, of course, but ultimately it's just another cynical piece of marketing and business for Hollywood's most easily exploitable demographic outside of children.

It is empty spectacle begging the viewer, "These are things you love and recognise! Please clap!".

Outside of the admittedly brilliant homage to The Shining, this is a film that's going to probably not age very well, especially if the inevitable sequels double down on the relentless, soulless fanboy bait.
