7 Biopics Where Anthony Hopkins Failed To Look Like Anyone Other Than Anthony Hopkins (With 1 Strange Exception)

5. Ptolemy

Oliver Stone's over-blown Alexander biopic had many, many faults, and though it does get a little better with subsequent viewings, it is probably more memorable for its failings than for the director's creative vision. In it Hopkins plays Old Ptolemy, the aged version of Alexander's childhood friend, bodyguard and eventual successor, with long wavy hair and beard, a bald crown and the visible scars of his celebrated military career. How They Really LookedHopkins' Version Perhaps that marble statue wasn't quite the best picture to use as a comparison, given that they all look pretty much exactly the same, but it's got to have at least vaguely represented the Alexandrian's looks. And though it is clearly the king at a younger age than Hopkins played him in Alexander, coins showing later versions of Ptolemy clearly show how different the real historical figure looked to how Hopkins played him. Unless he had a severe downturn in the hair department in his later years, losing his fine crop of snake-like tendrils to the ravages of time, it seems that the decision to play the character bald was probably a creative decision to show a greater passage of time. Because there's very little similarity between that coin or the statue and the bearded version of Stone's film.
