7 Craziest Film Fan Theories (That Actually Make Total Sense)
2. They’ve Needed A Bigger Boat For Years
It’s a shame that Chief Brody’s first summer on the job running the police force in seaside resort town Amity Island coincided with frequent attacks by a man-eating great white shark. It’s a little odd that the mayor insists on treating the first death as a boating accident, though… and even odder that the town coroner actually agrees with him. Oddest of all? The use of the phrase, “it’s happened before” to justify the decision.
Later on, when the truth can’t be hidden any longer, a tiger shark is caught and presented to the public by the mayor as the man-eater… a shark as rarely seen in those waters as the great white that actually killed those poor people. What a coincidence… unless the tiger shark was kept in reserve to be planted and ‘killed’, in case the boating accident storyline failed to convince.
What if the great white has been around for a while – killing every so often, just enough for the mayor and his cronies to blame on tragic accidents? What if the great white got larger, got hungrier, got greedy – and the extra deaths, coupled with the new, meddlesome chief of police, meant that the old cover up story wouldn’t hold water anymore?
What if a man-eating shark has in fact plagued Amity Island for years, and corrupt officials have been keeping quiet about the monster hunting their seas in order to keep the beaches open and the tourist dollars coming in?
