3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Juno movie
Paramount Pictures

Nobody needs to tell you why Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a cult classic. John Hughes' writing and directing, a cast of entertaining, lively teens, and the wish fulfilment of practically anyone watching: do whatever the hell you want, and enjoy doing it.

Starting out life as one of John Hughes' stellar teen comedies, Ferris soon learns that his hi-jinks (especially those at the expense of genuinely ill best friend Cameron) don't always lead to wish fulfillment. Matthew Broderick makes for one hell of a charismatic lead, one step ahead of his parents and school staff every step of the way.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off makes for a fun movie precisely because a child bunking off leads to them crashing a parade float, Cameron gaining the courage to stand up to his dad, and draws Ferris and his sister closer together. It's John Hughes at his very best: smart kids deservedly getting one over on the adults.

The legendary end quote "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it" hammers home the message: enjoy life while you still can. Watching Ferris Bueller is a good place to start doing just that.
