7 Horror Movies Where Supporting Characters Save The Day

3. Quint (Jaws)

Even though Quint is one of the most memorable characters in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, he hardly features until the main bulk of the action starts. However, by that point in the shark-infested mayhem, oh boy, are the rest of the characters glad they brought him along.

Not only is he the most capable of handling himself against a 25ft monster shark, even in the company of a seasoned marine biologist and police chief, he’s actually done it before. Having already survived the infamous sinking of the SS Indianapolis, the most-bloody real-life shark attack in human history, it’s fair to say he’s already earnt himself a fairly flawless CV when it comes to shark hunting.

Quint is one of the only characters prepared to take the shark of Amity Island seriously, after the Mayor dismisses the danger and reopens the beaches to the public. With the clock ticking until the next shark attack, it’s Quint’s expertise in sailing and shark behaviour that leads the crew of the Orca to lure them out to sea, away from the coast.

His resourcefulness allows the crew to track the shark using the barrels clinging to them and the oxygen cannisters that Quint brings on their quest prove to be the only thing that can stop the shark’s destructive reign for good, ridding the waters of Amity of the beast!

Although he doesn’t make it through the ordeal himself, without the resources and expertise of cinema’s grizzled ship captain, it’s likely that the trio of shark hunters wouldn’t have lasted half as long as they did.
