7 Horror Movies Where Supporting Characters Save The Day
1. Rod (Get Out)
The Rod of Get Out initially appears to be just another lovable goof of a best friend to Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris. Played by real life comedian, Lil Rey Howery, he’s immediately shown laughing and joking around with Chris as he heads towards his girlfriend Rose’s parents for the first time.
He’s charming, he’s easy to get along with… but even from the start we can see the roots of his security training working away as be begins to jest that Chris visiting his white girlfriend’s parents will be a bad idea.
By the time Rod becomes suspicious of what might be going on after failing to contact his friend, Chris has already been hypnotised and prepared to be dissected and replaced with an old relative of Rose’s.
Get Out thrives on playing with audience expectations and the psychology of stereotypes as it sets us up for a horrific plot twist at the end, when police car headlights fall on Chris, who's pinning Rose to the floor, his hands firmly around her neck. Not the most innocent of scenarios.
Fortunately, the door opens to the familiar face of Rod, allowing everybody both in-universe and otherwise to let out a sigh of relief (well, all except Rose) as we realise that everything is going to be okay! Without his loyalty and inquisitive detective skills, it’s likely that Chris would never have been able to escape the hell of the Armitage family and would still be stuck in his unconscious prison to this day. Isn’t that a sinking feeling?
