2. Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Elizabeth the First has been the subject of a successful cult-one that was necessary considering for a woman to rule alone at a male dominated time. For a long time this went without scrutiny, leading to the Virgin Queen perception. Unlike Malcolm X, Che Guevara and Gandhi, Elizabeth the First is revered in Britain as a symbol of feminist success and British courage, leading to her becoming an integral part of our national identity due to her unbending protestant spirit. Both films are worth watching; they are far more serious than 'Queenie' of Blackadder, and they each show her flaws; she was far from a virgin, and this is shown in the films, yet the cult-like image constructed around her remains strong, with The Golden Years portraying a woman with complete and utter devotion to her country, as well as commending her conviction to Protestant theology. This entry suffers from a further flaw; the nature of the subject (1500s) means that sources are scarce, and even more untrustworthy than they evidence surrounding the 20th Century. Although this does allow for a degree of artistic license which is constricted in the case of some of the more prominent figures of the 20th Century, the directors went a bit overboard in what was depicted as inarguable fact.
