7 Key Mistakes Upcoming Movie Reboots Must Avoid
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming – Uncle Ben Flashbacks
Spiderman: Homecoming will mark the much-discussed reboot of the Marc Webb reboot of the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy. This time it has the considerable clout of the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind it, a great choice of villain and a young actor who has already proved himself up to the task in Captain America: Civil War – what could possibly go wrong?
While they’ve established that Peter Parker has already been moonlighting as Spider-Man for a while, which was a smart move, this doesn’t mean that they won’t try and shoehorn in his origin story by forcing melodramatic flashbacks on cinema goers.
Every time an audience hear the words ‘Uncle Ben’ or ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ it’s their cue to fall asleep for ten minutes. Of course, there's emotional significance and it kickstarts Peter's heroic escapades but can't they skip over it this once? Everyone knows the story now and it does little to flesh out the character when it’s information people have sat through so many times before.
Let’s focus on Peter’s day to day struggles of balancing his school life with being a superhero. There’s plenty of great material to be found here and, as Raimi’s movies glossed over it with some impressive tray catching and Webb’s efforts were just plain forgettable, there's scope for Marvel to really make its mark here.
If they can go an entire movie without making people revisit this overdone chapter of Spiderman’s backstory it will be, without any exaggeration, the best thing about this movie.
