7 Little Known Tics That Defined Jared Leto's Joker Performance
3. He Changes His Voice Repeatedly
There's an idea of performance and theatricality to Leto's Joker performance that really has to be discussed too. Thanks in part to the decision to remove himself from his co-stars, you get the real sense that it's not just the audience that he's playing up to. That decision also made the other characters his audience and there's a very real feeling that he's playing a part for them.
And even more importantly, the Joker's power comes in the fact that he's never quite sure what he's performing at any one time. At times, he's a fearsome animal; a debonair cad in the golden age of Hollywood style; a pimp gangster or a serpentine sexual predator - dependant only on what character suits his circumstances.
And for all of his characters, he has a different voice that swings wildly in delivery and tone. Just as he pulls on different costumes to match the occasion, he pulls different voices out of his costume box too and it creates that intangible sense of unpredictability that was so key in Leto's formation of the character.
