4. The Howling Commandos
Originally appearing alongside then sergeant Nick Fury in a World War II comic called Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, movie fans might know them better as Captain Americas ragtag unit of fighters from the First Avenger film. Not all of the Commandos are present in the film, except for Dum Dum Dugan (played by Neal McDonough) and Gabe Jones (played by Derek Luke). There are five steady members in the film and that should be enough to make a film about those particular characters. McDonough and Luke have enough star power between them to carry a film, and the multicultural cast works as well. Its unclear how far off the end of the war is by the end of Captain America. My apologies if its stated and I missed it, but Steve mentions that he was told America won the war, which would suggest the outcome was still in doubt when his plane went down in Alaskartica. If there is still a war to be fought, you have the perfect setting to tell the story of the men that carried on in Steves absence. The real trick is determining whether or not Marvel can get out of its own way and just tell the damn story. It is maddening that when presented with a relatively easy story to tell that is based solely in a traditional genre, comic book movies work over time trying to screw it up (Jonah Hex, how do you mess up a western at this point? Its like burning corn flakes.). If Marvel doesnt over think it (and thats a massive if since over thinking everything is what they do) they could make an Inglorious Bastards style war epic that is a bit more historically accurate. Near the end of the film, they could also set up the next character on the list.
