7 More Horror Films That Eerily Came True
3. The Exorcist Inspired Other Cases Of Demon Possession... Or So Some Believed
Infamous throughout the world for its groundbreaking presentation of a little girl possessed by a demon and one of the most profitable horror movies ever made, The Exorcist is the story of Regan’s battle for her soul after she’s taken over by Pazuzu and ultimately saved by a Catholic priest, aka, a professional demon wrangler. Considering how controversial the film was, and still is really, it’s unsurprising that it’s garnered its share of blame for the actions of the unhinged in the wake of its release.
Just two days after The Exorcist aired on TV, Patricia Frazier came under the assumption that her daughter must be possessed by demons. The circumstances of this we will never know, as taking extreme action and not employing the titular solution to the film’s problem, she instead decided to cut out her daughter’s heart and leave it in the footwell of her car.
Now, in 1976, the film was enough evidence for psychologists to claim ‘cinematic trauma’ influenced Frazier’s actions, even though it was known she was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
