7 Movie Characters Everyone Hates On For The Wrong Reasons

3. David - Shaun Of The Dead

Why Everyone Hates Him: "What a smug tw*t! The bloody idiot can't keep his mouth shut and is always poking his nose in where it doesn't belong! They should never have brought him along!" But Wait... Aside from the zombies, David is the closet thing that that Shaun of the Dead has to an "antagonist" - after Shaun heads out to rescue his ex-girlfriend when the undead begin to overtake London, he ends up forming a ragtag crew with Ed (his best friend), Liz (who just dumped him), and her best friends, bickering couple Diane and David. David is poised as the "square" of the group - the irritating one who audiences are pretty much rooting to die instantly. First time watching the movie, though, it's easy to miss the fact that pretty much every decision that Shaun makes in is the wrong one: had he not set out to rescue Liz, holed up at home, and not led everyone to the Winchester, chances are that absolutely nobody would have died. Fact is: the moment that Shaun turns up at Diane and David's flat, he's pretty much leading them all to certain death. And as the "bad guy," David constantly reminds Shaun that this is the case. And we hate him for it. We hate him for it, because as far as we're concerned, Shaun is the protagonist and the hero, and therefore he must be correct and we should side with him. But in actuality, when David suggests that they don't leave his flat because it's safer than The Winchester, he's totally in the right. He's right when he questions Shaun's plan, time and time again, too. He's pretty much always right. So whereas the movie poises him as something as a tw*t, it's hard to argue with his logic - it's easier to hate him than to realise that he was talking more sense than Shaun.
