Blowing up buildings and crashing planes are undoubtedly impressive feats of practical effects wizardry, but how about filming a real solar eclipse, an incredibly rare natural event that lasts for roughly two minutes?

This was the challenge facing the filmmakers behind Nomad, an indie sci-fi movie about a man who spontaneously moves to a different part of the world every 12 hours. Presumably, he ends up near an eclipse at some point, and for this scene, director Taron Lexton decided to try and capture the real thing.

The shoot occurred in summer 2019. Ahead of time, countless different locations were scouted so that the best spot could be found, with the production settling in Elqui Valley, Chile. The actors rehearsed extensively for the scene, and in the end, it took ten people three full days to ensure that everything was properly prepared.

Even on a low budget, a solar eclipse would be relatively easy to fake using CGI, but Lexton and his crew were successful in their mission, recording some stunning imagery in the brief two-minute window that they had. A true one-take wonder!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
