7 Movie Sequels You Forgot You Wanted

Movie sequels are a staple of Hollywood, for better or worse. Weekly we see franchises release their umpteenth instalment to reap the rewards from prior successes. Often however, fan favourites fall by the way-side and never receive the sequel they deserve. Whether due to poor box office returns, writing turmoil or bad timing, there seems to be an endless list of excuses as to why we haven’t seen numerous films get a much-desired sequel.

While there are films for which droves of fans protest and demand follow ups, there are those which you forgot you wanted at all. It's either been too long since the original or the first didn't do well enough, but regardless you've contented yourself with the fact you'll never see your favourite film get a deserved second.

But we are not without hope, and today we're going to relight the fire in your bellies and stir up a flurry before unseen, for movie sequels you forgot you wanted, but need and would die for.

Science fiction films are always near the top of the list when sequels are being touted. However, one proposition has been sorely neglected thus far. District 9, released back in 2009 garnered rapturous critical acclaim with five Oscar nominations for its interpretation of sensitive real-life struggles, in a fictional Earth annexed by a sickly alien species. As a political allegory of the apartheid, writer and director Neill Blomkamp still manages to instill entertainment into the film alongside the poignant message, proving with its successes at the box office, grossing over $200 million.

Since District 9, Blomkamp has kept up with sci-fi but neither the poor Elysium or the even poorer Chappie lived up to the standards of his debut film and it could take a sequel to recapture the magic.

The South African-Canadian film-maker did recently confirm that he does plan on filming a follow-up, but not until he finishes other projects in his backlog. When a sequel is made, Blomkamp says he wants to make sure it honours the themes of the original.
