Clearly Mr. Downey Jr. is a busy fellow, but once his association with Iron Man and the MCU ends or pauses for breath, he'll be free to go back to Victorian London and team up with Watson for more crime fighting antics. It's a film many people will see, with the combining box office successes of the two current films grossing over a billion dollars.
As Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows has done so well commercially, it would be a no-brainer for director Guy Ritchie to return to the franchise with his last film King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword reportedly losing Warner Bros over $150 million.
If the writers are short of ideas they've got no excuse. There are plenty of stories to adapt from Conan Doyle's books, and plenty of growth for the existing characters to develop.
It has been nine years since the original and seven years since the second, and another sequel is long overdue. Handled properly, it would prove to be a guaranteed hit amongst the producers and viewers.
