7 Movie Villains That You'll Genuinely Feel Sorry For

2. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the Star Wars saga (1977-2005)

Where to begin? This is probably the easiest choice out there. If Two-Face is a tragic figure, then Darth Vader surpasses him by being a tragic hero. When Episode IV, V, and VI originally came out, everybody was under the impression that the hero was Luke Skywalker and the villain, Vader. The prequels clarified that Lucas had another intention. Goosebumps crawled on viewer's skins, since they knew what Anakin would eventually become. What no one knew was why or how he ended there. All he wanted was to ensure that his special one lived through his deadly premonitions. He sacrificed his Jedi integrity in order to save her. But he sank too deep. The Dark Side consumed him. His ego stopped him from living how life should have been, as he probably underestimated the Dark Side€™s consumption. But no matter how gifted he was, Palpatine had seduced several others before. It was routine. He barely broke a sweat. He just had to tickle the right nerves to bring someone as powerful and naïve to the darkness. Anakin is definitely the hero of the epic €“ the hero who lost. And if Two-Face is bad, then how can this not be worse? Two-Face lost half his face; Anakin lost most of his body. Both of their loved ones died, but the latter was under the impression his children died as well. And finally, Anakin €“ now Darth Vader €“ redeemed himself. The prophecy of The Chosen One turned out to be true after all. This redemption, however, barely lasted. The audience had to see the actual hero of the story die. At least he died with redemption, but everybody wished him to survive. Shame, really. The only thing not going for him is Hayden Christensen€™s horrible performance.
