7 Movies That Scared You Away From Ever Taking Public Transport Again

4. Carpooling - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Whilst not strictly a mode of typical public transport, carpooling does involve sharing a vehicle with strangers just like a train, bus, or plane - and few films have scared viewers away from sharing rides than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974. The films begins with the gang of Sally, Franklin, Jerry, Kirk and Pam, who are all travelling by van to visit an old family home when they spot a hitchhiker on the side of the road. They decide to pick him up out of pity - despite the fact that he is "weird looking". He's weird acting too. Within a few minutes of collecting the hitchhiker the gang begin to regret their decision, with their oddball maniacally slashing himself with a knife and seemingly receiving great pleasure from it. They bundle him out of the van, thinking that they've gotten rid of him. Unfortunately, Sally will be seeing a lot more of him later on. The hitchhiker in Texas Chainsaw Massacre sets the scene for one of the most profoundly terrifying and disturbing films ever to come out of America, and if there was ever a reason not to give a lift to the guy on the side of the road - then this is it right here. The Hitcher is another natural candidate for this category, but the way in which the carpool scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre expertly sets up the terror that ensues for the rest of the movie means that Tobe Hooper's movie gets the nod. If you're a fan of the film, it's difficult to spot a hitchhiker without Leatherface and his roaring chainsaw briefly popping up in your mind.
