7 Predictions for the Future of the Comic Book Movie
2. Risky Moves
The studios behind the superhero films have made some bizarre decisions whilst making their movies that have often paid off in incredible fashion. Hiring unknown actors is always a risk but the studios don't want actors whose names would overshadow the character.
WB hiring Nolan to make their Batman franchise was a strange one. Nolan wasn't unproven as a director but huge budget movies weren't exactly associated with his name. From there hiring Heath Ledger as the joker must stand as one of the riskiest casting movies in cinema history but we all know how well that went.
Marvel too has made it's share of risky moves. There must have been someone over at marvel who at least thought "hold on a minute here, guys" while they cast Chris Hemsworth (unknown) and Robert Downey jr (known for all the wrong reasons) as leads or when they hired Joss Whedon or Kenneth Branagh to take up directing duties.
Even with it's 'could be too soon' Spider-man reboot Sony faced a huge risk and one that has shown good results and may bloom into even greater triumph.
These risks are a defining point of superhero movies and have played a huge part in making the genre what it is. There have been safe choices, such as Joe Johnston directing Captain America, which have paid off but they haven't been given half the praise and attention that the gambits have. It looks like we'll continue to see more strange moves from Marvel, with Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-man standing out in particular, but it's whatever tactic that WB comes up with for pushing JLA that could be the biggest gamble of all as they risk sacrificing decades worth of money making films.
