7. He Needs to Prove Himself
Though Woo went a fair way to redeeming himself with the stellar Red Cliff, his critical favour took a massive hit once he moved to Hollywood in 1993, and he has only made one inarguably great film there - the inscrutable Face/Off - such that he still needs to prove himself once again to American audiences. While it's certainly a question as to whether Woo was disappointed with his American films, and whether he feels at all inclined to prove himself, we as viewers need to see Woo make another classic actioner on the level of Face/Off. While a third Expendables film might not seem the arena in which to do that, one can only imagine that in the wake of the likes of Hard Target and Broken Arrow, critics and commentators said the very same thing about Face/Off, and look how that turned out. On the other hand, if Woo does feel up to the challenge and does want to prove himself, then we should buckle up, because when Woo goes all out - as we all know - there's virtually no rivalling him in the action arena, safe for perhaps the likes of James Cameron and Christopher Nolan. Time will tell as to whether this wish is fulfilled, but how do you think a Woo Expendables film would fare? Let us know in the comments below.
