7 Reasons Men Need To Relax About The New Ghostbusters Movie

3. Ghostbusters Has Already Been Ruined (Multiple Times)

If you’re worried that this new version of Ghostbusters is going to ‘ruin’ the original, then you need reminding of this - Ghostbusters has already been ‘ruined’ since at least 1989. That was the year the extraordinarily average Ghostbusters II came out and torpedoed the film franchise into oblivion.

Ghostbusters II has a Rotten Tomatoes score that is far lower than anything Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy has produced. And famed film reviewer Roger Ebert claimed that when he watched the film with a packed house, he only heard one laugh through the entire film. Bill Murray despises the film and openly proclaims that it destroyed the Ghostbusters legacy, and was the reason he didn’t want to get involved with anything else in the franchise.

Although, if you want to be really accurate then you could argue that the rot had actually started in 1986. That year saw the release of a desperate cash grab called the ‘Real Ghostbusters’ – a cartoon adaptation so bad that the title had to be changed to help protect the original property. This cartoon was produced in part by Coca Cola (!), and featured voice work from the guy that played Uncle Joey on Full House. An even poorer follow-up, the Extreme Ghostbusters started in 1997 and lasted a whopping four months before mercilessly being put out of its misery.

Since then, there has been a litany of poorly produced merchandise and cash grabs, such as irrelevant mobile games, that keep attempting to wring whatever value is left in the name. Far from being a death blow for the Ghostbusters name, this film might bring some dignity back to it.
