7 Reasons The Guardians Of The Galaxy Shouldn't Be In Avengers: Infinity War

6. The Guardians Are Too Similar To The Core Avengers

One of the main reasons why both Avengers movies worked so well was that each character brought something different to the table. Everyone had unique powers, abilities and personalities, allowing the writers to give each character something useful to do. But not everyone in the MCU is wholly unique, and the Guardians share quite a few similarities with the core members of the Avengers team.

Star-Lord's leadership and commitment to his friends directly mirrors Captain America, Gamora shares Black Widow's combat ability and dry personality, Groot and Hulk are both extremely strong and lack communication skills, Rocket's humour, wit and engineering expertise parallel Tony Stark's, and Drax/Thor are both muscular, melee-oriented humanoids that aren't so good with metaphors, slang and English in general.

This in mind, the Guardians could end up feeling like a superfluous addition to the plot, nothing more than a glorified Easter Egg intended to sell those oh-so-pricey licensed toys and figures. What's the point in having them here if they don't contribute something new to the film?

This also hits on another problem that's buckled many a comic-book movie; repetition. The grand-scale destruction in the third act and the heroes arguing before uniting are just two of many tropes that these movies tread, and Marvel runs the risk of creating another; the samey characters. The Guardians sure look unique, but under the skin they're essentially the B-Avengers - and shoving both groups in the same movie could expose this similarity in a devastating way.
